Empower Kenpo Karate teaches American Kenpo Karate. It was developed by Senior Grand Master Ed Parker to be a more “street-wise” version of the martial art, making it a very practical way of self-defense. Where other martial arts may focus on things like high spinning kicks that “look good”, American Kenpo focuses on down to earth principles of fighting. At Empower Kenpo Karate we teach that the best solution is to avoid an altercation if at all possible but if it is not then it is our desire that we have equipped the student with the confidence and skill to defend themselves properly. In addition to teaching adults we have a specific kids curriculum that is fun and enjoyable. It is a rigorous active class where we promote discipline and confidence. It is also never to late to learn martial arts. The art can be tailored to fit the person. For someone who is older it can promote balance and strength.

Our lead instructor is Mr. Allen Gowdey, a 5th degree black belt under the American Kenpo Federation, with over a decade of teaching experience. He currently lives in Princeton, TX with his wife and 3 kids.

Matt Wood is a 3rd degree brown belt under Mr. Gowdey. He began his journey in Kenpo Karate when he was 15 years old. After advancing to blue belt his instructor had to close his studio. a few years later he began chiropractic school and restarted Kenpo in Irving under Rick Fowler where he advanced to the level of 3rd Brown. However, this was the time he graduated and moved and unfortunately Kenpo was put on the back burner. Several years later he started again advancing back to the level of 3rd Brown under Mr. Gowdey. He teaches classes at the studio part time and is a full time chiropractor at the Garland VA Hospital. He hopes to test for first degree black belt soon!

Classes are taught Tuesday and Thursday nights. Kids classes are from 5:30 – 6:15 and Adult classes are from 6:30-7:30
